This is the face of Youth Pride in Massachusetts.
Pretty beautiful.
I'm a writer.
This is the face of Youth Pride in Massachusetts.
Pretty beautiful.
After last night’s bru-ha-ha around Romney’s decision to abolish the state commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth… and then reinstate it… (the Globe has a good, detailed story of the flip-flop this morning) … one is left to wonder if state policy is nowing being dictated to the governor by the Alliance 8 Alliance.
A group who was behind this quote-unquote news article posted by the Agape Press yesterday at just about the same time — and if my calculations are right… about a half hour before the original Romney abolition — that not only called Youth Pride, "100 percent about homosexuality and cross-dressing and various other perversions," but more importantly to the administration… called Romney a hypocrite:
The Article 8 Alliance spokesman says Governor Romney, who is a possible 2008 Republican presidential candidate, is giving homosexual activist groups carte blanche to "have their way with kids in Massachusetts." He contends that there is a "huge amount of hypocrisy" in the governor’s political pitches to values voters, particularly as he travels to South Carolina and other southern states, "talking about what a conservative he is and how pro-family he is, when he allows this to happen."
You think a guy running for president would have a little thicker skin than that. Someone calls you a hypocrite online and you abolish a 14 year old Commission that has helped countless youth find the support and care they need in the world to grow up to be productive citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts?
Sheesh.
This year’s Youth Pride is being held THIS SATURDAY, May 13 (also my sister’s birthday! Happy birthday Katie!) at noon at the Castle (It’s a venue change because of the rain) located at Arlington and Columbus.
Want to show your support to the LGBTQI Youth of Massachusetts?
Show up.
EDITED TO ADD: Hothouse blog has a great entry up now about this issue.
Bay Windows has a headline up, but no text as of yet.
*sigh*
And he makes the announcement two days before Youth Pride. An event that I’m sure means a lot to a lot of people. But something that feels even more personal to me because my friend/co-worker has been planning a fundraising event for tonight for Youth Pride.
Here are some statistics on the need for LGBT youth supports. Because Romney doesn’t seem to have heard of them.
• 97% of students in public high schools report regularly hearing homophobic remarks from their peers.
• The typical high school student hears anti-gay slurs 25.5 times a day.
• 53% of students report hearing homophobic comments made by school staff.
• Less than 20% of guidance counselors have received any training on serving gay and lesbian students.
• Teachers fail to intervene in 97% of incidents involving anti-gay slurs at school.

:: LGBT Youth Statistics:
* They represent 3-10% of your school’s population.
* The average age for discovering sexual orientation is 13.
* They won’t come out to you unless they feel you are safe to talk to.
* They may have heterosexual sex to prove they are not gay or lesbian.
* Same-sex behavior does not mean someone is gay or lesbian.
Due to a stigma of rejection, lesbian, gay and bisexual youth are:
* 5 times more likely to miss school because of feeling unsafe
* Two times more likely to abuse drugs
* Four times more likely to attempt suicide
EDITED TO ADD: As of 7 p.m. Bay Windows now has this headline that reads:
That’s some FAST backpeddling Gov! From a 3 p.m. announcement to a 6:30 retraction.
Almost makes you look like a flip-flopper. (shocker!)
